We've all heard it before...
But good nutrition is not only an option you should be considering when contemplating a weight loss regime, it is absolutely vital to successful weight loss and for controlled management.
I'm faced on a daily basis with the same common questions about nutrition. What should I eat? Why do I need to bother?
So here is a quick 'run-down'...
Several main benefits of good nutrition include the following: Lowered cholesterol (good for the heart), with healthy nutrition blood pressure is significantly reduced, and a marked increase in overall vitality and and abundance of energy.
There are a multitude of 'fad' diets out there, and many reading this will have tried one or two or in the past have experienced the vicious cycle of unhealthy weight loss/weight regain - the 'yo-yo' effect.
Some of the more popular weight loss programs suggest eliminating certain food groups (carbs, animal fats...) while others suggest taking mega-doses of vitamins, which I highly recommend you don't do. There is an old saying - "Too much of a good thing..." Well overdosing on vitamins would fit nicely here!
On the other hand, a great weight loss program will incorporate solid and precise nutritional advice and encourage moderate exercise.
A great weight loss program will also provide advice on how to effectively avoid the "yo-yo" effect and advice on how to ensure a balanced diet, and why adopting a healthy lifestyle is crucial to weight loss as well.
Please be aware, many folks believe they have to deprive themselves of their favorite foods when starting a weight loss program, but choosing certain foods in moderation is key to successful long-term weight loss, not cutting them out of your diet altogether.
I've added below a few guide lines I teach my clients when contemplating weight loss:
- Check your weight, then set a realistic weight loss target. Daily or even weekly 'weigh-ins' are needed to accurately chart your weight loss progress. Don't forget to document your results.
- Stay hydrated! Water is great when losing weight, it helps fill your stomach and is also great for the complexion...
- Alcohol is a killer... it's full of empty calories, limit your intake as much as possible.
- When selecting your meals try to chose from fresh fruit and veggies, if you need to eat meat, try to select the leanest cut you can. Chicken and turkey are better choices than red meats...
- Watch the size of your servings. Try putting your meal on a smaller size plate, you may end up eating less. Also take your time while eating... Your body will tell you when it is full... Start to listen to it!
